My body may be a bit softer, but so is my heart.
My skin has many fine lines and sun spots, but I have a glow from within and my mind is clearer than ever.
My eyesight continues to require stronger reading glasses, yet I can see even better and brighter.
Although I am less than one year and 39 days away from the big 5-0, I am not worried about aging or consider my best years behind me. On the contrary, I can finally say that I am enjoying the NOW with a bit of anticipation for years to come. I am not wishing for yesteryear or waiting for the next life milestone to "arrive" or to be happier. I am finding joy EVERY day.
This wasn’t always the case. I have done a lot of work on myself. Deep, often painful, rooting out of false thinking work to get to a point that I am not living in anxiety or feeling not good enough. There are still those moments, but they don’t impact the quality of my mind or life.
There isn’t just one reason as to why I feel this way, but one of the biggest is yoga. I first discovered this healing practice about 8 years ago. Yoga was the first step on my path to physical wellness and mental wholeness. I arrived to my first class a serious mess - inside and out.
Simply put, yoga changes the way you look and the way you see. If you want to jump-start your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health, run (don’t walk) to a yoga class! Yoga is for everybody and every BODY. You just need to find the right studio, class, and teacher. Don’t give up if you feel deeply uncomfortable for your first three classes…because you will, regardless of your physical capabilities.
My advice would be to try different teachers to find one that resonates with you. To get you started, here are three studios that have a broad range of teachers:
Yoga Bliss, Akron/Fairlawn – Yoga Bliss is my yoga home. I teach and practice there and consider everyone (teachers and staff) amazingly capable, loving, and just downright awesome. Owned by Caroline Gronowski, the studio is beautiful with many amenities like fresh towels, showers, boutique, and a juice bar. I am quite spoiled by this place and am honored to teach there.
Release Yoga, Green/Akron – Release has a crazy cool vibe and has the best variations on yoga like Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Yoga, which they do on the nearby Portage Lakes and a lakeside yoga class at the Nauti Vine Winery (with mimosas!). These are just a few. Check out their website to see more. Release is owned by Pattie Wagner and a few of my favorite yoga peeps, Tamera Anich and Sarah Clark teach there.
Cleveland Yoga, Cleveland/Beachwood – Cleveland Yoga was the first hot yoga studio in the area and played a huge part in the growth of yoga in Northeast Ohio. I believe it has some of the area’s best teachers and I'm proud to say it was where I earned my RYT 200 certification. Although it is not close by my home, I make the trip pretty much every Friday for Jenn Harte’s 12:15PM class. Her classes have the perfect combination of usable wisdom, well-crafted sequencing, and motivating music. This class also has an assistant that is simply aaammmazzzzzing. Robin McCann has hands and techniques that refine your poses and make your body feel like butter. Come join me.
Here's to stepping outside of your comfort zone and stepping onto a yoga mat. True bliss awaits!
