There is a mix of energy, hope, and determination swirling around at this time of year. Outside of all the magazine articles and other media, a clear indication that New Year’s Resolutions are alive and well are the number of people finding their way to a yoga mat. Classes at Yoga Bliss are busting at the seams and the energy is amazing. I love the thought of so many people taking steps toward their brightest selves and know for certain that yoga can change your life.
Unfortunately, I also see too many people muscling their way through their practice and pushing their bodies in uncomfortable and potentially unsafe positions. It begins to look like punishment and it is very clear they are there to fix something…at all costs.
Because this happens, one of the main messages that I share in my classes (especially this time of year) is that you are enough. You are enough regardless of your weight, your body, your career, your bank account, marital status, or any other definition of success that you have taken on.
For decades, my resolutions were made because I felt something was wrong with me. I know a lot of people approach self-improvement in that same negative space. Suffering grueling workouts, denying themselves nourishment to save calories, always in self-judgement. Soul sucking for sure and definitely not life-giving. How can that be improvement? You hit a number on the scale or your paycheck but your are miserable in the process.
We suffer, ancient yoga teachings tell us, because we forget who we are and how divine we truly are.
How about approaching your 2017 goals and your practice with fierce love as a way to refine and reveal the best version of yourself? Peeling away one layer at a time to reveal your amazing, beautiful self. It doesn’t mean it will be easy at all times. It takes both grit and grace for sustainable change.
Whatever you are considering for yourself in 2017, please know that you are enough!
