“I was recently asked to write an inspirational note to women that are being introduced to yoga through RAHAB Ministries. RAHAB Ministries is an Akron area non-profit that serves women and young girls who are victims of sex trafficking. Yep…it happens right here in Akron Ohio. Actually, Ohio is ranked as one of the worst regions in the US for sex trafficking so you can understand how important their work is.
After I got past the fact that I absolutely have no understanding of the challenges these woman face, I focused on what I do know. I knowyoga to be a magical and very healing practice. It can heal deep wounds (physical, emotional, and spiritual). It can also put them back into their body and their power.
I wanted to communicate all of that and remind them how truly magnificent each of them are regardless of their past or present circumstances.
RAHAB stands for Reaching Above Hopelessness And Brokenness and that’s what the practice of yoga can do too. Their situation is similar to the life cycle of a lotus flower. A lotus flower is a common yogic symbol of rebirth. A lotus is born out of and rooted in muddy, murky water. It grows through the worst of circumstances into an unblemished, beautiful flower. Actually, every night it submerges back into the mud and miraculously re-blooms each morning towards the light without any residue on its petals. These women are strong, courageous, beautiful, and pure despite the dark places they have been or what they have had to do just to survive...just like a lotus.
If you are reading this newsletter, it is likely that you are blessed beyond measure and have no idea how it must feel to be a survivor of sex trafficking. However, it is also likely that you have had some heartache, illness, or are struggling in a different way. Even our average lives can be messy. I hope this email inspires you to know that you are strong, beautiful, and can be reborn out of even your most challenging life circumstances.
Keep reaching for the light my friend.
If you can...
