I have exactly 50 hangers in my closet. That includes pants, jeans, dresses, blouses, jackets, and t-shirts. I keep my unmentionables, tanks, shorts, PJ’s, socks, and yoga pants folded in drawers.
Each time I buy something, I get rid of an item so I don’t accumulate more than I need. It’s actually pretty easy for me to part with things. There is a direct relationship between the level of anxiety I feel and the amount of clutter around me. One of my core desired feelings that I reach for everyday is to feel “Light.” Extra stuff just makes me feel heavy.
At my Desire Mapping workshop earlier this month, there was a lot of interest around the idea of clearing out clutter. My advice? Start with a closet cleanse. So many reasons to do this. First of all, you will save precious time getting ready in the morning. A second reason is it will reduce your stress because everything you keep fits well and looks great. Finally, by shedding older things you make room for new items that can amp up your style.
Organizing a closet can be simple, but not easy for the vast majority for a handful of reasons. It can be difficult to let go of pretty little things (that no longer fit) and the over-worn favorites (that no longer look good), particularly if they involve hard earned money or sentiment. But you can do hard things!
Step #1: Clear time in your schedule to really get down to the nitty-gritty of releasing what no longer fits (figuratively and literally). Dedicate a hefty chunk of the day to go through every single item in your wardrobe.
Step #2: Try on every item and ask yourself the following questions:
- Does this fit?
- Have I worn this in the last 12 months?
- Is this currently in style, and/or does this still accurately represent my style?
- Is this is damaged in any way (piling, rips, stains, missing buttons, broken zippers, fading, etc.)? If so, is it worth getting repaired?
- Do I feel confident when I wear this?
If you answer “no" to ANY of the above, it’s time to get it out of your closet. Trust me...you will feel so much lighter.
I may not be winning any best dressed contests, but I’m OK with that. Simplicity and less stress feels good and everyone knows it is not how you LOOK...It's how you FEEL.
