My home renovation project is completed! I’m over the moon happy with the results! It feels more comfortable and lighter. Lighter because the process revealed how much extra stuff I had in my home. “Had” being the operative word.
It’s relatively easy for me to give away things that that I don’t use or love. However, this project took me to the next level!
New carpet and paint required EVERY closet to be completely emptied. When we pulled everything out of our closets and stacked it in the middle of the room (or in another room), I realized, that I had more work to do. I was totally ready to so some purging. The exercise of having to move everything out of the closets/rooms also inspired Jason and Kylie to critically look at their stuff.
In the end, we had a dining room filled with some really great stuff that no longer added value to our home our lives. furniture, linens, artwork, craft supplies, clothes, kitchen supplies, a ton of books, and more. I wished I would have taken a picture.
Wondering how we cleaned out so much?
Before we put anything back into a room, closet, cabinet, or drawer it had to earn a place. We asked three questions for each item.
Do I love it?
Do I use it?
Do I really, really want it?
We had to have a “yes” to at least one of those questions…otherwise it was a goner.
On the most part, it really was that simple. However, there were a few items that took some additional thought. Like, items that were given to us from a loved one, or items that have some sentimental meaning, or items that we paid a lot of money for. None of these reasons are good enough to keep things in your home that you don’t love, use, or really, really want. It just takes up space in your home and it takes up space in your mind!
I believe it is far more powerful to pass on useful, beautiful stuff that someone else will love, use, and value.
How many ”things” do you have in your home or life that have outlived it’s useful purpose in your life? I encourage you to begin with one closet. Go through everything, ask the three questions(above), and decide on purpose if it deserves space in your home or life.
