How To Make Winter Suck Less

Is winter ever going to end? From the Midwest to Northeast, winter is holding on. Schools are closed, flights are cancelled, and a lot of plans have been changed for a lot of people.  Like you, I had a full schedule of meetings and to-do’s that got derailed.  Not to mention the fact that it is mid march and I am so over winter.

Well I wasn’t going to let this storm give me the winter blues.  A few weeks ago, I was introduced to a formula that not only helps you endure the dark, cold winter days, but it encourages you to embrace the season.

Winter is hard for me.  I have managed depression for most of my adult life and it is much more challenging during winter.  Given this, I was totally paying attention to the podcasts that I was listening to and had to get the book.  What I learned was why Denmark is the happiest country despite their long winters ruled by little daylight, snow, and icy winds

The Danes practices Hygge (pronounced “HOO-ga”).  Hygge roughly translates to “coziness”, it not only helps manage winter, it’s a recipe for a happier life.

The essential element of Hygge is to treat the soul by improving the situation from cold and miserable weather outside to feeling warm and cozy inside. Danes light candles, they enjoy rich foods that are satisfying, they embrace community and connection. Snuggly blankets, candles, a warm fire, yummy food, a cup of hot chocolate, coffee, a glass of wine are all great tools to make the most of the dark nights.

So how did we hygge on our snow day?

  • We enjoyed breakfast TOGETHER AT THE TABLE.  Usually, Kylie eats at the kitchen counter while I am packing her lunch on a typical day.

  • I really savored my coffee.  I acknowledge the warmth of the mug, the amazing aroma, and the rich flavor.

  • We got off our computers and made a pumpkin pie (from scratch) and homemade whip cream.

  • Our fireplace roared all day.

  • We lit candles.

  • Kylie had her ultimate comfort food (macaroni & cheese) for lunch.

  • We gave ourselves manis/pedis.

  • We had turkey chili, with lots of cheese and sour cream on top, for dinner.

  • At the end of the day, I enjoyed a glass of wine next to the fire snuggled up in a blanket with a book.

I encourage you to learn more about Hygee and more importantly find ways to Hygee in your life.  This Book can be found on amazon or at your local library.  Word of warning, there is a waitlist at the library.  Everyone is embracing Hygge.
