How to Have a Holiday Glow at Any Age

I remember a time when I could put on a little extra makeup to get that holiday glow. But, at 55, it takes a lot more and it definitely doesn’t start just before the event.

Let’s face it ladies, when you hit midlife, it takes a lot more time and effort to look and feel our best.

Healthy skin is closely connected to almost everything we know about healthy living. The more we support our body’s biological processes, the more radiant our complexion becomes.

Healthy Habit #1: Stay Hydrated

Your skin looks its best when you’re hydrated. I carry a water bottle everywhere. It’s become a joke between my husband and I, because I can’t go on a simple errand without it. Of course, drinking a lot of water is key, but you can also get water from foods that are naturally high in water content. Add lemon for additional benefits!

Healthy Habit #2: Get Your Beauty Sleep

At our age, we already have a hard time getting a solid night’s sleep.  Now add in all the hustle and bustle from the holiday and your sleep is really compromised. We underestimate how important sleep is to the health of our skin. Sleep replenishes the skin’s collagen and elastin, which maintain firmness and tone. Be willing to say no to an invitation or a request if you are at a sleep deficit.

Healthy Habit #3: Move Your Body

Have you ever noticed that glow after a brisk walk, yoga, or a workout? That rosy glow comes from increased circulation. Exercise instantly brightens your skin and mood. I know…easier said than done. The best thing to do is find something that you love to do. I hate working out in a gym by myself. But taking a tennis clinic or going on a walk with a friend is something that I willingly show up for. Find what you love and it will be easier to show up for.

Healthy Habit #4: Practice Self-Care

Self-Care is a Reminder that YOU ARE WORTHY.  You are worthy of investing time and energy into yourself. If you’re anything like me, it seems like we always have something more important to do. Doing something for yourself, every day, that nourishes you will lead to less stress and more vitality. It doesn’t have to be a big production. It is sometimes the little things that make a big difference. One daily self-care habit, for me, is using a tongue scraper. (You didn’t expect that…did you?) Tongue scraping is an Ayurvedic health practice that I picked up from The Chopra Center years ago. There are so many health benefits to using it and takes less than 30 seconds two times a day. You can find one, locally, at Mustard Seed Market, or on Amazon. If interested, you can learn all about tongue scraping here.
