Midlife Requires Serious Skincare

In my 20’s and 30’s, I barely wore sunscreen and paid little attention to my skincare routine. I was busy investing in my career and family. I also could get by with little sleep, little make-up, little exercise, and little regard to what I ate and still look halfway decent. Youth can really make up for a lot of sins.

In my 40s, I started to pay more attention to my health and not because of vanity but because a life-threatening virus landed me in the hospital for 3 weeks.  I had little vitality and that was my wake-up call to take care of myself. This blessing in disguise led me to the world of yoga and other holistic practices.  I began to listen to and live in my body but didn’t pay much attention to my skin.

Then, I hit 50! Decades of neglect and menopause wreaked havoc on my skin.  I knew that I needed to get serious about skincare if I wanted the outside of me to match the inside.

In this blog, I’m going to share with you the one skincare treatment that has been a total game-changer for me.  It is Microneedling.

What Microneedling Is

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure where little holes are created in your skin to stimulate your skin’s own healing process. It has definitely helped the tone, texture, and is a more natural way to keep my face from looking so gaunt without relying on fillers.

I’ve tried fillers, a year ago, and am not opposed to them, I just prefer this method of naturally producing collagen.

Where I Go for It

Allison Klaben from Modern Vitality Medi Spa is my go-to girl. She is the best and we never run out of things to talk about which distracts me from the discomfort of the procedure. Yes…there is some pain.

What Happens During the Treatment

On my most recent visit, we took a video for you to see what it is all about.

What My Skin Looks Like After the Treatment

It looks like a bad sunburn right after the treatment and it’s tight. There is some redness, dryness, and flakey skin over the next few days. I use gentle soap and a lot of moisturizer. At about day 4, I use an exfoliator to help slough off the dead skin. In about a week, I’m glowing.

What Else I Do to Take Care of My Skin

In the last 5 years, I have experimented with so many services and products, and here is what is working for me right now.

  1. Good quality skincare. I use and love OBAGI products in the morning and evening. My routine includes a gentle cleanser, toner, Vitamin-C Serum, and a moisturizer. You can get Obagi at the Parker Skin Clinic in Beachwood. Ask for Jill Gunton. She will guide you to the right products.

  2. Retinol. This midlife “magic eraser” treats fine wrinkles, dark spots, and rough skin on the face caused by the sun. Start this in your early 40’s and for goodness sake, wear sunscreen and stay out of the sun.

  3. Sunscreen. I don’t leave the house without it! My favorite is La Roche-Posay Tinted Sunscreen

  4. Regular Facials. Thanks to the membership program at Modern Vitality Medi Spa, I have stayed consistent with a monthly facial. My go-to is the Hydrafacial. It’s like a deep-cleaning for your face. Their membership is the best deal in town.

I know all of this sounds like a lot but it is actually very doable for this girl who definitely likes to keep things super simple.

Face it ladies, when you hit midlife, it takes a lot more time and effort to look and feel your best.

I hope you found this post helpful.  You know that I’m all about working on the mind, but I’m definitely feeling more compelled to put energy and effort into aging well.

What about you?  I would love to know if there is a product or service that helps you maintain your youthful glow.
